Austin's roots derive from the sprawling suburbanite town known as Canton, MI. Recently, he just graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in interdisciplinary environmental science and society with an emphasis in hydrology, or as he calls, a hydrology degree. Austin’s affinity for the environment and water started at a very young age when his father spent time teaching Austin how to whitewater kayak and survive in the wilderness. Many have speculated that the only reason Austin got into hydrology was so he could occasionally go kayak while working, and there is some truth to that.
Austin now serves at Huron Pines AmeriCorps as the Healthy Lakes Landscaping Coordinator for Antrim Conservation District and couldn’t be happier. His main goal during his service is to return the Chain of Lakes in Northern Michigan to their former glory by limiting nutrient pollution and managing stormwater runoff. Austin’s hobbies, other than kayaking, include playing hockey, snowshoeing, mountain biking, wilderness backpacking and less cool activities, such as oversleeping, playing harmonica, and dungeons and dragons.
