When is a soil erosion permit required?
In Antrim County, a soil erosion permit is required for:
Minor earth disturbances (such as tree plantings) that are hand-dug are exempt from the permit requirement.
Other small projects are sometimes exempt from the permit requirement, but still require an official exemption. In these cases, the permit application form is still completed and submitted to the soil erosion office.
Please note: Obtaining a soil erosion permit does not alleviate the need for additional local, state, or federal permits. It is the landowner's responsibility to ensure that all necessary permits are secured.
- any earth change made within 500 feet of a lake, pond, river, stream, or other body of water
- any soil disturbance larger than 1 acre in size
- Not included: normal plowing and tilling of soil for crop production. Farmers are required to obtain a soil erosion permit for activities other than crop production, including the clearing of one acre or more or earthwork within 500' of a waterbody.

We strive to streamline the permitting process to be both user-friendly and environmentally sound.

- Application review
- Property review: the soil erosion officer will assess areas at risk of erosion, as well as look for potential wetlands or critical dune areas.
- Coordination, as needed, with the Antrim County Building Department, township zoning, Antrim County Road Commission, health department, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), and Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR).
- Permit issuance
- Periodic site visits are conducted to monitor Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) measures, the movement of sediment, and vegetation growth.
- Permit closure (once site stabilization is complete).
