Michigan On-Farm Produce Safety is a proactive approach to produce safety in the State. This program offers free, voluntary and confidential services to fresh produce growers who are required, or aiming to be compliant with the Food Safety Modernization (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (21 CFR § 112). Produce Safety Technicians are located throughout Michigan to provide technical services such as undergoing various assessments like a Produce Safety Risk Assessment(PSRA) or an On Farm Readiness Review(OFRR), helping to develop a Produce Safety Plan, and providing on-farm assistance.

Breanna Hannula is a Produce Safety Technician based at the Grand Traverse Conservation District in Northwest Michigan, working primarily with growers in Manistee, Benzie, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, and Antrim counties.

Breanna graduated from University of Wisconsin – River Falls with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science where she focused on the livestock component of agriculture. Breanna took a detour from agriculture to work in Environmental Conservation when she served on an AmeriCorps trail crew in Northwest Colorado.

Throughout her two years in Colorado, she built and maintained hiking and mountain biking trails throughout the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. After returning to the Midwest, Breanna worked as a Seasonal Land Steward and later as a Misty Acres Farm Assistant for the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy.

Breanna is excited to meet and to work with farmers throughout the region and to continually further her knowledge regarding the optimal intersection of environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture. Breanna lives in Traverse City where she spends her time outdoors enjoying the beauty of the area.
