Tree Planting Information and Resources
About Your Baby Trees
- Bare root seedlings are removed from the ground during their dormant (non-growing) period.
- It is best to plant your seedlings as quickly as possible.
- It is normal for the tops of the seedlings to appear dry during dormancy, but the roots should never be allowed to dry out.
First Steps
- Open your tree package and ensure that the roots are moist. If they are not, add moisture. Do not submerge roots during storage.
- Prune off any broken branches or roots. This will not damage the tree.
Planting Instructions
- Carefully untangle the roots when you unpack and separate your trees. Soak the roots in water for a few (3 to 6) hours.
- Dig a hole a few inches wider than the spread-out roots, and about 1 inch deeper than the roots.
- Plant the tree! Partially fill the hole with soil, pressing it gently around the lower roots, then shovel in the remaining soil. Pack soil firmly, but not tightly. The root flare should be level with the ground. Ensure that roots do not protrude from soil.
- Water thoroughly. This step is crucial!
- Spread a layer of mulch two inches deep in a three-foot donut-shaped circle around the base. Important: keep mulch one inch away from the seedling’s stem.
- Water regularly, generally once a week, to keep soil and mulch moist but not soggy.
Can't plant right away?
- Trees can be stored in darkness below 40°F until ready for planting.
- Keep roots moist and tops dry.
- If buds start to open or mold appears, plant the trees immediately.
