Soil Erosion Permitting

Antrim County's Soil Erosion Control Program goal is to streamline the permit process to be both user and environmentally friendly.

In Antrim County, soil erosion permits are required for any earth change made within 500 feet of a lake, pond, river, stream, or other body of water OR any soil disturbance larger than 1 acre in size.

Minor earth disturbances (such as tree or bush plantings) that are hand-dug are exempt from this requirement.

Soil Erosion Control Permits are required when:
  • earthwork is being done within 500' of a river, lake or stream
  • earthwork being done on one acre or more (not the normal plowing and tilling of soil for crop production)
  • farmers are required to obtain a soil erosion permit for activities other than crop production:  the clearing of one acre or more or earthwork within 500' of a river lake or stream

Permit Issuance Involves:
  • Application review
  • Property review:  erosion, wetlands, high risk erosion, critical dunes (note:  MDEQ has final jurisdiction over wetlands, high risk erosion or critical dunes)
  • Coordination with building department, zoned townships, road commission, health department, MDEQ and MDNR
  • Permit issuance
